How to choose good inventory management software? by Joushua James
Inventory management is the core function that defines an effective supply chain. Without proper inventory management, inventory costs will just soar as there in no accurate data regarding stock. So, it's important to have a proper inventory management system in place. In order to implement an inventory management system you need to understand the factors that should be considered when selecting a particular management system.
The first factor you need to consider is the cost. Is the cost of the inventory management system within your budget? In the market you will find inventory management software to offer different levels of functionality. Inventory software functionality ranges from being very simple to being very complex and along with increasing functionality is the increase in cost. Look into the functionality that is offered, see if it matches with your work requirements and judge if the cost of the software is worth the functionality it offers. Compare different product features and their cost before making a selection.
The next factor to consider is the features offered by the inventory management system. Do you want a software that performs a simple track of the inventory levels and it's location or do you want a complex system which can forecast your inventory needs well into the future ? Will the company that's offering the product customize its features according to your needs? Understanding the functionality of the product will give a clear picture of how it matches with your inventory management requirements.
The third aspect is to find out how the software is going to integrate with the other company systems. You will find highly complex and costly integrated systems available in the market. This is important because your investment in the investment management software will be worth the cost, if it can match with your existing systems, rather than getting a system which has problems integrating with your existing systems. You also have the option of going in for standalone systems.
Finally and the most important point to consider is if budget is available for maintaining and operating the inventory management software system. This is because a complex inventory management software system will require competent and skilled operators to ensure it's accuracy and proper functioning. If you cannot afford such cost, better to go in for a low budget system that fits will with your expenditures. Otherwise your investment can turn out to be a loss due to improper functionality.
